Hurricane Irma in Cuba: Alfano: “Italy pledges humanitarian support”.

“Italy is eager to contribute towards humanitarian efforts following the havoc wreaked by Hurricane Irma after its passage over Cuba a few days ago”.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Angelino Alfano, said these words to announce the multilateral emergency funding made available today by the Italian Cooperation Service to benefit the World Food Program.

“We have earmarked 300,000 euros,” said the Minister, “so that food rations can be distributed to 660,000 people over the next three months, prioritising the more vulnerable sections of the population”.

The brutal force of the hurricane hit 13 of the country’s 15 provinces, affecting 31 municipalities with a population of 2.2 million people. All UN agencies have been mobilised to support the rescue actions organised by the Cuban government.

“Italy stands close to, also in a concrete way, the families of the victims and the injured,” concluded Alfano.
