UNGA. Alfano meets his Qatari counterpart Mohammed Al-Thani

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Angelino Alfano, had a cordial meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman Bin Jassim Al-Thani , on the fringes of the United  Nations General Assembly. The meeting focused on the continuing crisis in the Gulf area and the main bilateral cooperation issues.Minister Alfano told his interlocutor: “Italy continues to follow with the utmost attention the evolution of the crisis in the Gulf,” and added “we welcomed the reassurance offered by the countries of the “Quartet”, according to which the controversy will be managed in full respect of international law, will not escalate and its solution will be sought only through diplomatic efforts.” Alfano underlined that “any solution will have to be sustainable over time and respectful of the principles of sovereignty and dignity.”Minister Alfano then expressed his satisfaction over ” the excellent level of bilateral relations that our Countries enjoy in every field. Our political dialogue has grown even stronger following Memorandum of Understanding, which was signed during my recent visit to Doha. Our economic partnership is strong and solid. I am sure that there are still margins to enhance it.”Mr Alfano and his counterpart discussed the intense and fruitful cooperation Italy and Qatar have in the commercial and financial sectors, stating that “many Italian companies are contributing to building key infrastructure for the implementation of the Qatar National Vision 2030 Plan. It is an acknowledgement of Italian excellence and we believe that it may pave the way for more success stories.””Italy, on its part,” Alfano concluded, ” is promoting an important reform package also with a view to attracting international investors and companies, and giving them a more favourable business environment. I trust that these reforms will lead to increase Qatari investments in Italy.”
