The Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Vincenzo Amendola – after attending the celebrations for the 75th anniversary of the battle of El Alamein, where he also met with the Egyptian Foreign Minister Shoukri – had a round of political consultations in Cairo’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the Assistant Foreign Minister for Arab Affairs, Tarek El Kouni; the Assistant Foreign Minister for European Affairs, Ihab Nasr; and with the Director of the Department for Palestine, Bahaa Dessouki.
During the talks, Mr Amendola reaffirmed Italy’s sincere wish that the re-establishment of diplomatic relations at Ambassador level last September might proceed in parallel with the expectation – strongly felt and shared by Italian public opinion and institutions – of seeing positive developments arise from the judicial cooperation on the barbaric killing of Giulio Regeni, in order to cast light on the truth of what really happened. In this perspective, Undersecretary Amendola talked with his interlocutors of the opportunity to further develop the great potential of bilateral relations, strengthening political dialogue on several dossiers, with a special focus on Libya and the role of Egypt in the Peace Process and on the socio-economic development of the most densely populated Country in the Arab world. It is in this prospect that Mr Amendola thinks that a communication channel must be kept open between Rome and Cairo on all the numerous issues of common interest, including human rights.
During his visit to Egypt, Undersecretary Amendola also met with the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, with whom he took stock of all the major regional dossiers, with a special focus on Libya, Syria, the Peace Process and Yemen.
