Today the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Angelino Alfano, had a telephone conversation with the British Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson, on the military operation conducted yesterday in Syria by the United Kingdom, together with the United States and France.
Foreign Secretary Johnson, in explaining the aim of the intervention, reaffirmed that the action was not intended to favour a “regime change” but to give a strong message of deterrence in response to the new use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime.
Minister Alfano explained Italy’s position to his counterpart and expressed the hope that the risk of an escalation in the area may be foiled and that this military action may be followed by the resumption of the Geneva negotiation process.
