The Farnesina has noted the statement that EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker made yesterday regarding Italy’s action on migration and migrant reception.
Italy wishes the EU Commission and other EU Member States act in the same way as soon as possible, following the same security criteria and protecting human rights and dignity as Italy is doing.
Italy hopes the entire EU begins to share responsibility when it comes to saving people at sea, repatriating migrants and cooperating with Countries of origin and transit so that Italy does not carry the full weight of migration flows in the Mediterranean alone, as has happened for years.
There is also a strong desire from Italy for the European Union to reinforce their cooperation instituted a long time ago with international bodies, such as the IOM and the UNHCR. Moreover, Italy hopes for the EU to financially support the contributions from the Africa Trust Fund.
