In light of the initiatives designed to improve the situation in Libya, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Enzo Moavero Milanesi, had yet another telephone conversation with the Head of the Libyan Presidential Council, Fayez Al-Sarraj,
The Minister has confirmed Italy’s solidarity and support for the people of Libya and its institutions at a time of great difficulty, further exacerbated by armed clashes in the capital city of Tripoli.
Minister Moavero has affirmed Italy’s continuous commitment to promote an effective and determined action by the international community to promote dialogue and reconciliation, with a view to overcoming the current crisis and strengthening the basis on which security and stability in Libya must rest.
The Italian government is following closely and constantly the evolution of the situation in Tripoli. To this end, direct contact continues with the UN Special Representative for Libya, Ghassan Salameh, with whom Minister Moavero had a long telephone conversation yesterday. Their conversation focused on joint efforts necessary to overcome the present crisis by means of a renewed dialogue and holding special meetings proposed by the UN. The implementation of the UN Plan of Action offers a most important opportunity to achieve a real and lasting stabilisation of Libya.
In the Conference on Libya that Italy plans to host in the Fall, security will be the priority issue on the agenda. It is a pre-condition for the holding of elections, a key goal of the UN Plan. The Conference will also deal with reconciliation and the respect of human rights.
Yesterday Minister Moavero also confirmed to the Chairmen of the Foreign Affairs Committees of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies that he stands immediately available to report on Libya before the Parliament.
