The Farnesina Collection of Contemporary Italian Art celebrates its twentieth anniversary and, to honor this important anniversary, twenty-one new works by twentieth century “classics” and young artists will be exhibited for the Conference of Ambassadors. In addition to works by Campigli, Burri, Greco, Marini, Paladino, Pomodoro and Capogrossi, the exhibition will display the installations of “Web data sculptures” by Oriana Persico and Salvatore Iaconesi, Luca Pozzi’s experiments between art and science and Carola Bonfili’s immersive video experience.
Their artwork is illustrated in the volume “Beyond Borders – Twenty Years of the Farnesina Collection 1999-2019: New Acquisitions”. The art catalogue includes introductions by Ambassador Umberto Vattani, who was the mastermind of the Collection, Greta Alberta Tirloni, Paolo Serafini and Cesare Biasini Selvaggi.
“Twenty years after its creation, the Collection makes a crucial contribution to the idea of a country that has built an entire ‘system’ around its creative excellence which has become an element of strength and identity in the daily cultural diplomacy activities carried out by this Administration” commented Ambassador Elisabetta Belloni, Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “The Collection will continue to be at the center of various activities (international conferences and events, exhibitions, openings to the public, participation in celebration days, online services to make the artistic heritage exhibited more accessible) that increasingly characterize the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a ‘service-focused institution’ that our country can always rely on”, Ambassador Belloni concluded.
The Collection includes more than 470 works – some owned by the Farnesina while others on free loan – by more than 250 artists and covers the entire history of Italian art from the 1950s to the present day. In 2017, the Collection was awarded the “Art Patronage of the 21st Century – Institutional Art Awards” as the best art collection of a public institution.
