Scalfarotto: satisfaction for the exclusion of Italian products from the new US tariffs

Great satisfaction for the US Government’s decision not to apply additional trade tariffs to Italian products was expressed by Undersecretary Scalfarotto, who, together with officials from our Embassy in Washington, had recently met US Government officials raising awareness about the negative effects of further tariffs on Italian products, with the support also of over 40 US members of Congress who had written a letter to President Trump to this effect.

“I am particularly satisfied with the outcome of the negotiations and, in particular, with the fact that the final decision on the matter has also taken into account all the arguments we put forward, against the application of any further tariffs on Italian products, to the White House, the USTR, the Department of Trade, the State Department and Congress. Italian agri-food products, such as wine, pasta, coffee, as well as leatherware and other products, were at risk not only of new tariffs, but also of the hiking of the tariffs on products such as cheese and spirits already applied last October” said Mr. Scalfarotto. “Thanks to this team work by the Italian Government, our Embassy in Washington and our business associations we have confirmed that we can achieve important results when we work together as a country and in unison.” The Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs concluded.
