Today Deputy Minister Emanuela Del Re participated by videoconference in the meeting of the Contact Group of Ministers for Development, which brings together eight countries: Australia, Canada, Italy, Japan, Norway, United Kingdom, United States, Sweden. The Commissioner for Social Affairs at the African Union, Amira Elfadil Mohammed Elfadil, was present as a guest.
Speaking on the subject of food security, the Deputy Minister stressed how the Italian commitment focuses on the fight against malnutrition, on the construction of sustainable food systems and the correction of food waste to strengthen the agri‑food value chains.
“In this pandemic, the challenge is to ensure food security by promoting modern, inclusive and sustainable agriculture” – she said – “This can be achieved by strengthening producers’ resilience to climate change and to market shocks, in order to enable farmers to overcome temporary restrictions due to Covid-19”.
The Deputy Minister then recalled how Italy is supporting the UN system in its efforts to prevent a global food crisis, with both medium- and long-term actions. “Italy and FAO have launched the Food Coalition: a platform with a multi-stakeholder and multi-sectoral approach that can be used to mobilise expertise, to provide political support, to establish a space for dialogue between different actors and to promote initiatives in support and to the advantage of countries in need,” she concluded.
