The Italian-Libyan Joint Committee met today in Rome, at the Ministry of the Interior, to formally start negotiations for the amendment of the 2017 bilateral memorandum on cooperation in the field of migration.
During the meeting – which took place in a constructive and proactive atmosphere – the Italian delegation confirmed the will of making a substantial change to the cooperation with Libya in the management of irregular migration flows, through the recall and timely compliance with applicable human rights standards. A central role will be recognized to the competent UN agencies and the progressive overcoming of the system of centres hosting migrants.
The parties agreed to continue negotiations with new meetings at an early stage.
Finally, the Italian delegation also showed great attention and solidarity with the situation currently faced by hundreds of thousands of Libyan citizens displaced by the conflict.
