Vice Minister Emanuela Del Re chaired an informal videoconference on the situation in Mali, which was attended by representatives from France, Germany, Spain, the EU, and the Sahel Alliance.
The meeting was a useful opportunity to meet, also in view of the next meeting of the small group of the Coalition for the Sahel and the organisation by the Italian side of the meeting of the Special Envoys for the Sahel.
The Vice Minister reiterated the Italian support to the ECOWAS mediation, including the request for the rapid formation of a new civilian-led transition executive, towards subsequent elections within a reasonable timeframe. “Italy hopes that the transition can represent an opportunity for real future change towards the creation of inclusive, democratically elected institutions closer to the expectations and needs of Malian society. This is also so that Mali can represent a new positive model of “governance” in the delicate Sahelian regional framework”- said the Vice Minister.
“What happened in Mali proves once again that stability cannot be ensured without a multidimensional approach to security” – she continued – “within the framework of the European Union and the Coalition for the Sahel, Italy will therefore be the promoter of an integrated effort to benefit the stability of the region that ensures the right balance between security, development and good governance”.
