The Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Emanuela Del Re, held telephone talks with the Ethiopian Minister of Peace, Muferiat Kamil, for an update on the humanitarian situation in the Tigray region.
In relation to the Humanitarian Access Agreement signed between the Government of Ethiopia and the United Nations, the Vice Minister reiterated the importance of a timely activation of humanitarian corridors. She then drew the attention of Minister Kamil to the need for effective access to all people in need, in all the areas affected by the conflict.
“Italy is ready to provide the necessary aid to the civilian population affected by the conflict” – Ms. Del Re said, emphasising that we have already prepared an aid intervention for the refugees who have arrived in Sudan, through the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, and that further aid interventions are in the pipeline. Humanitarian materials will also be sent as soon as the logistical conditions allow. Ms. Del Re therefore expressed the hope that any operational or administrative requirements governing humanitarian assistance to affected areas in Tigray will not delay or limit the operations for saving lives.
