Relaunching a strong Transatlantic cooperation is essential to overcome the challenges posed by “climate change”. This is the key message that the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Luigi Di Maio, wanted to share today, from the virtual forum of the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue, with the US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, John Kerry, the German Minister of Economy and Energy, Peter Altmaier, the Canadian Minister of Natural Resources, Seamus O’Reagan, and the EU Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson.
The approval of the European Green Deal, the US return to the Paris Agreement, the new decarbonisation legislation approved in Canada and the UK, as well as the recent establishment of the Italian Ministry for Ecological Transition, are promising and converging signs towards the goal of climate neutrality by 2050.
Italy is one of the most ambitious countries in terms of energy transition and has decided to invest in energy efficiency, renewable energy sources and the development of new affordable and clean technologies, focusing on “green finance” and administrative simplification, Minister Di Maio stressed.
The Italian Presidency of the G20 and the partnership with the United Kingdom in the COP26 Presidency – the Foreign Minister concluded – give Italy the responsibility and opportunity to place these key environmental issues centre stage, at the heart of the international agenda for 2021.
