Meeting today via videoconference between Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Marina Sereni and Richard Hatchett, CEO of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), launched in 2017 at the World Economic Forum in Davos in the wake of the Ebola crisis and currently active in the COVID-19 fight.
“The Coalition has played an important role in the development of vaccines for COVID-19, and that is why we are pleased to have joined, a year ago, the global alliance that supports and funds it,” said the Vice Minister, who added: “Precisely because of its commitment, we have invited CEPI to participate in the work of the Global Health Summit on May 21, co-hosted by Italy and the European Commission, whose purpose is to share a set of principles for pandemic prevention, preparedness and response. The experience of CEPI – continued Sereni – can be significant in developing preventive strategies to prepare countries for pandemic situations”.
Sereni and Hatchett also discussed the possible development of new vaccines, particularly a single vaccine prepared against all coronaviruses, the cataloguing of all vaccine prototypes in a single database, and the efficacy of various products in view of COVID variants.
“We are ready to collaborate with the Coalition also to create new contacts and new opportunities for Italian companies and research centres that can provide a valuable contribution to the achievement of the goals that Cepi sets,” concluded the Vice Minister.
