FOREIGN MINISTRY NOTE – The Director General for Italians Abroad travels to Sudan

The Foreign Ministry and the Italian Embassy in Khartoum continue to follow, with the utmost attention, the case of the Italian national Marco Zennaro arrested in Sudan in connection with a commercial dispute.

In view of the contacts already underway at all levels, the Director General for Italians Abroad and Migration Policies, Luigi Vignali, will travel to Sudan on Monday 31 May, on a two-day mission to Khartoum on the instructions of Minister di Maio, for further talks.

The Director General will meet representatives of the local authorities, carry out a further consular visit to the detained Italian citizen and meet with his family and his lawyer in Sudan.

The aim of the mission is to sensitise the competent Sudanese authorities on the need for a rapid definition of the Italian citizen’s position and also to request their cooperation in improving the conditions of his detention, while waiting for a hopefully rapid conclusion of the case.
