Minister Di Maio’s visit in Niger – 2 June, 2021

Strengthening cooperation on migration issues and consolidating bilateral relations will be at the heart of the talks of Minister Luigi Di Maio during today’s visit to Niamey, the capital of Niger.

The Minister’s agenda includes meetings with the President of the Republic, Mohamed Bazoum, Prime Minister Ouhoumoudou Mahamadou, Minister of Foreign Affairs Hassoumi Massoudou, Minister of the Interior, Alkache Alhada, and the local leadership of UNHCR, as well as a visit to the MISIN contingent.

Niger is a priority partner for Italy in the Sahelian region, crucial for regional stability, fighting against jihadist terrorism, and managing migratory flows towards the Mediterranean. Within this context, Italy confirms its commitment to the country in terms of development and cooperation, as the signature of a new framework agreement also shows.

The visit to Niger is Minister Di Maio’s second mission to Sub-Saharan Africa after his visit to Bamako (Mali) last April. Italy strongly reaffirms that the African continent is a priority, as demonstrated by the special attention dedicated to Africa by the Italian G20 Presidency.
