Participation of the Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Maria Tripodi, in the ceremony commemorating the victims of the Cutro shipwreck (Rome, 26 March.2023)

On behalf of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, Undersecretary Maria Tripodi participated today in the ceremony commemorating the victims of the Cutro shipwreck, organised by the Afghan Embassy in Rome. The initiative, which took place in the presence of the victims’ families, was intended to commemorate the people who died in the tragic event that occurred along the Calabrian coast and to thank the Italian rescue personnel.

While expressing her deepest sympathy for the heartbreaking tragedy, “as a woman, as a citizen of Calabria and Italy, and as a member of the government”, Undersecretary Tripodi pointed out “how we need to ask ourselves what we can do for Afghanistan, to restore dignity and prospects to men and women in their own country’.

In this sense, Undersecretary Tripodi indicated how the Cutro tragedy “has pushed us to do more and better, finding immediate results in the renewed commitment of the Italian government, also in the European context, to a shared, structured and therefore effective management of the severe migration problem”.
