Tajani: “Ready to promote the America’s Cup in Naples abroad. A major event of sports diplomacy”

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, expressed his appreciation for the decision to host the 38th edition of the America’s Cup in Naples — the world’s premier sailing competition and the oldest international sporting event still held today.

“An excellent result and great work by Minister Abodi. It will be a major moment for a great Mediterranean city. There will also be economic benefits, and in terms of tourist numbers, it will be an extraordinary opportunity. The decision to host such a high-level sporting event in Italy is a significant chance to enhance the value of Naples, Campania, and the entire South of Italy,” said the Minister. “As demonstrated during previous editions, the America’s Cup has the potential to generate an extremely positive economic impact at the local level, in terms of tourism, job creation and media exposure, which will further support the South and our country in strengthening Italy’s soft power on the global stage,” continued the Minister.

According to a study carried out by the University of Barcelona and the Barcelona Capital Nàutica Foundation (FBCN), the 2024 edition held in Barcelona generated an economic impact of €1.034 billion for the city and the Catalonia region, attracting approximately 1.8 million visitors. The influx of tourists contributed to the creation of over 12,000 jobs, generating tax revenues of €208.5 million. In addition to the direct economic benefits, the event enjoyed substantial media exposure, with an estimated value of €1.367 billion, reaching a global television audience of 954 million viewers.
