The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, today received the Foreign Minister of Uruguay, Mario Lubetkin, at the Farnesina. The meeting provided an opportunity to review the excellent state of bilateral relations, characterised by strong ties in political, commercial, and cultural fields, further strengthened by a significant Italian presence in Uruguay.
Minister Tajani reaffirmed the priority status of Latin America within Italy’s foreign policy, emphasising Italy’s role as a voice for the Latin American continent in Brussels and European capitals. In this regard, Rome will host the Italy – Latin America Conference in October.
Tajani confirmed to his counterpart Italy’s support for the finalisation of the EU-MERCOSUR agreement, while also stressing the need to adequately address the concerns of key productive sectors, such as agriculture.
Full alignment was noted on major international dossiers, ranging from the Middle East to Ukraine. Regarding the latter, Uruguay will participate for the first time in the Ukraine Recovery Conference in July, co-organised in Rome by the Italian and Ukrainian Governments.
Finally, Minister Tajani took the opportunity to invite Minister Lubetkin to the forthcoming Italophony Summit, which will be held in Italy in the coming months.
