The Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Maria Tripodi, co-chaired the fifth meeting of the Bilateral Political Consultations Mechanism in Rome with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Peru, Ambassador Félix Denegri Boza.
The meeting confirmed the excellent state of Italian-Peruvian relations and provided an opportunity to explore the complementarity of the respective economic systems. Infrastructure, energy, logistics, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, the environment, agriculture and raw materials are just some of the sectors in which entrepreneurs from both countries are collaborating ever more effectively, in line with the diplomacy of growth promoted by Minister Tajani. These opportunities are encouraged by the EU-Member States-Peru Trade Agreement and the “Global Gateway” strategy, which provides interesting prospects for Italian companies.
Particular emphasis was placed on the upcoming 12th Italy-Latin America and Caribbean Conference and the related opportunities for collaboration with Italy not only in the fields of science, technology, culture and development cooperation, but also in the fight against transnational crime and drug trafficking, thanks in part to many legal diplomacy initiatives and coordination between judicial authorities and police forces.
“Italy’s experience, gained during the years of mafia massacres and violent attacks by criminal organisations on national institutions, has made it possible to suggest an operational model that is both effective and firmly respectful of the principles of the rule of law and fundamental freedoms”, Undersecretary Tripod added, concluding on the effectiveness of EU technical assistance programmes in the field of justice and security implemented by Italy, of which Peru is also a part.
Finally, the Mechanism allowed for a frank exchange of views on the main regional crisis areas, such as Venezuela, and international ones, from the Middle East to Ukraine.
The Undersecretary said: “Peru is an important partner in the Latin American region. I expressed my satisfaction to Deputy Minister Boza for today’s fruitful consultations and for an increasingly intense bilateral relationship, relaunched with my mission to Lima and followed by other political visits by the Italian government over the last year. There is a common desire to continue working to the best of our ability in the mutual interest of both countries.”
