Deputy Foreign Minister Del Re at the Conference on Facilitating the Entry into Force of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT)

Today the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Emanuela Del Re, attended the Conference on Facilitating the Entry into Force of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) at the United Nations Building in New York.

In her address, the Deputy Foreign Minister reaffirmed that the CTBT is a strategic priority for Italy, representing a “key component of the global architecture of nuclear non-proliferation and embodies the will and the aspirations of people throughout the world.”

Minister Del Re lamented that 20 years after its approval, the CTBT has not yet come into force despite having achieved two important results: “it has paved the way for a moratorium on nuclear tests and created a highly effective global monitoring system.”

“Italy has always been a staunch supporter of the CTBT”, said the Deputy Foreign Minister, relaunching the call on all the States that still have not ratified the Treaty to sign and ratify it now.

“With the same spirit” – she continued – “we urge the Democratic Republic of Korea to take tangible steps towards complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation by engaging in credible and significant negotiations.”
