Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Emanuela Del Re, had a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sudan, Asmaa Abdalla, on the sidelines of the 74th General Assembly of the United Nations. It was the first time a representative of the Italian government met with a representative of the civilian-led transitional government of Sudan. The long and cordial meeting focused on major regional issues and on bilateral cooperation. Special attention was paid to promoting cooperation between the two countries on actions aimed at countering illicit trafficking with special reference to the initiatives Italy has developed with regards to irregular migration flows. Deputy Minister Del Re also confirmed our Country’s unfailing commitment to supporting the ongoing political process in Sudan, a country that Italy considers as a strategic partner in Africa whose stability is of the greatest importance also in view of the region’s overall stability.
