La mostra "Scrivendo la Divina Commedia" al Comune di Saint Gilles

The graphic and calligraphy art exhibition “Scrivendo la Divina Commedia” (Writing the Divine Comedy) – an initiative of the Italian Cultural Institute of Brussels, organised as part of the celebrations for the 700th anniversary of Dante Alighieri’s death – arrives on March 15 in the municipality of Saint Gilles, after having stopped off, among other cities, in Brussels and Antwerp. The exhibition, open until March 28, 2022, is part of the Italian Week organised by the municipality of Saint Gilles.

The exhibition is the result of a major international project that the Director of the Institute, Paolo Sabbatini, curated and launched in 2016 in Cairo: the calligraphic and graphic transcription of the first twenty-one verses of the Divine Comedy in various languages, by master calligraphers from various interested countries and enthusiasts. The project is in collaboration with other Italian Cultural Institutes around the world and also involves cultural institutions in other countries.

The Belgian edition of the exhibition also includes calligraphies in Dutch, French and English, as well as a mixed media work with the Hebrew translation of the first verse: “Nel mezzo del cammin di nostra vita” (When I had journeyed half of our life’s way), by Ermanno Tedeschi, a refined artistic mediator between various cultures.
