To mark International NASH Day, a public education campaign to raise awareness of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), on 14 June the Embassy of Italy in Washington hosted an event entitled “From Progress in the Control of Viral Hepatitis to the Rising Epidemic of NASH”. Organised jointly with the Global Liver Institute, the event provided an opportunity to discuss the most recent developments in liver disease research and treatment and the role of science and research in addressing the related challenges. The focus was on bilateral collaboration by Italian and American researchers and institutions.
The Italian Ambassador, Mariangela Zappia, addressed the meeting, underscoring the existing collaboration in this field between Italy and the United States. “Our two countries”, she observed, “work together side by side on a daily basis in many life science sectors, from precision medicine to oncology, from biotechnology to the application of robotics and artificial intelligence in surgery”.
Participants at the event included the 2020 Nobel laureate for Medicine, Harvey J. Alter, M.D., Distinguished NIH Scientist Emeritus, Department of Transfusion Medicine, Clinical Center, National Institute of Health (NIH), who gave a presentation on the hepatitis C virus. Patrizia Farc, M.D., Chief, Hepatic Pathogenesis Section, Laboratory of Infectious Diseases, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, NIH and Donna Cryer, CEO, Global Liver Institute, also took part.
