Italian citizens may lose citizenship automatically or by formal renunciation.
The following people lose citizenship automatically:
- Italian citizens who voluntarily enlists in the army of a foreign country or accepts a public office with a foreign State, despite being expressly forbidden to do so by the Italian government (art. 12, paragraph 1, of Law No. 91/92);
- Italian citizens who, during war with a foreign country, served in the military, held a public office or acquired the citizenship of that country (art. 12, paragraph 2, of Law No. 91/92);
- adoptees in case of revocation of adoption due to a fact attributable to them, provided that they hold or acquire another citizenship (art. 3, paragraph 3 of Law No. 91/92).
