International Copper Study Group (ICSG)

Overview, Mandate and Objectives

The International Copper Study Group (ICSG) was formally established as an autonomous intergovernmental organization in 1992. The ICSG is the only multilateral institution dedicated to copper market issues. Its activities, projects and publications cover a wide range of issues, in particular transparency, market access and sustainable development. The Group has 25 Member States. Membership is open to any country that is a member of the United Nations involved in copper production, use or international trade. The Group’s current representativeness is high.

The share of ICSG members on the World Copper Market in 2024 are as follows:

– raw copper production: 80%

– refined copper production: 89%

– refined copper use: 84%

To fulfill its mandate, the Study Group pursues three objectives:

  • to increase market transparency and promote an exchange of information on copper production, use, storage, trade and prices, providing forecasts on copper production and use and assessing current and future capacities of mines, plants, foundries and refineries;
  • to promote international cooperation on copper-related issues of general interest such as health and environmental impacts, research, technology transfer, regulations and trade;
  • to establish a forum where industry and governments meet and can discuss openly. The ICSG meetings are held twice a year.
