The International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV) was established with the Agreement of 3 April 2001. France is the depositary of the Agreement. The Organisation’s headquarters have recently been moved from Paris to Lyon. The OIV has 50 members who account for 86% of the overall production and 71% of wine consumption in the world.
Italy is the OIV’s founding country and primus inter pares in terms of global wine production and export.
The OIV’s main functions are four: development of standards for the wine sector; research and publication; processing of databases, statistics and sectoral information; education and communication.
Italy is strongly committed to the OIV in order to enhance production in the wine sector; encourage the international harmonization of existing practices and standards and, where necessary, prepare new international standards to improve the conditions of processing and marketing of wine products and contribute to considering consumer interests.
