Italy, Albania and Greece reached an accord in New York, in the margins of the 67th UN General Assembly, on the development and building of a natural gas pipeline from Azerbaijan’s Shah deposits to Italy, passing through through Greece and Albania. The memorandum of understanding was signed by the foreign ministers of all three countries – Giulio Terzi, Edmond Panariti and Dimitris Avramopoulos.
Strategic importance
The three countries attribute major strategic importance to the TAP (Trans-Atlantic Pipeline) project, since the development of a system of natural gas links will increase energy supply security and the availability and diversification of routes and sources.
EU hails step forward
The EU hailed the TAP project as “an additional step forward in the direct supply of natural gas from the region of the Caspian Sea”, as Energy Commissioner Guenther Oettinger commented.
