Anti-ISIS Regional powers must be involved; I’ve spoken with Ukrainian foreign minister, the ceasefire is holding

One of the main challenges facing Europe and the United States in tackling the threat from ISIS – especially in Iraq – is to construct a coalition against the terrorist organisation and involve the regional powers. Powers that include Turkey and Iran, as well as the Gulf states and Egypt. These were some of Minister Mogherini’s comments in her speech at the event in Brussels presenting the Transatlantic Trends survey organised by the German Marshall Fund of the United States. The Minister also addressed the problems linked to the negotiations on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) between the European Union and the USA. In her view, the pace of the talks must be stepped up to reach a conclusion.

Mogherini also mentioned her conversation with her Ukrainian counterpart, who informed her that in substance the ceasefire is holding. She underscored that the diplomatic effort is bringing the first positive steps and that it is “crucial and strategic to maintain European and Transatlantic unity without sending out contradictory signals”.
