Brazil – Milan discusses “Italians across the ocean”

“Italians across the ocean. Artistic relations between Italy and Brazil in the 20th century” is the title of a conference being held on 3 – 5 May in Milan. The event intends to stimulate international discussion to contribute to greater knowledge and understanding of cultural and artistic relations between Italy and Brazil, and vice versa, during the 20th century, highlighting events, dynamics and protagonists. It was sponsored by the Cultural and Environmental Heritage Department of the University of Milan and the Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC) of the University of  São Paulo (USP), with the Museum of Culture of Milan, the Department of  Foreign Languages and Literature of the University of Milan and the Lina Bo and P.M. Bardi Institute,

The event is split into sessions over three days, with the first day dedicated to the visual arts, the second to literature, theatre and cinema and the final day to presentations on visual arts, architecture and the arts system. The study days are being held at the same time as the opening of the “Italians across the oceans exhibition”, which includes stories of artists in modern and indigenous Brazil in the mid-20th century. The conference and exhibition are part of an extensive project of events associated with the International Convention Agreement signed by the Department of Cultural and Environmental Heritage of the University of Milan and the MAC USP. The event is also part of the “Year of Italy in Latin America” project, which is promoted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Tourism, the Ministry of Economic Development, the National Institute of Foreign Trade (ICE) and the Conference of Rectors of Italian Universities, with the contribution of many businesses.
