Cirinnà Act – Provides for the transcription of same-sex civil unions

With the coming into force of the Cirinnà Act and its implementing provisions, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) promptly instructed its overseas offices to transmit same-sex civil union deeds to the Italian Municipal Authority of reference to be transcribed on the local register, after verifying the deed’s compliance with local laws.

For documents written in a foreign language to be effective under Italian law, they must be accompanied by a translation in Italian whose conformity must be certified by the competent diplomatic or consular office or by an official translator.

Differently from the statement made by Equality in today’s press release, the law limits the consular offices’ intervention to the certification of the conformity of the translation, which must be provided by applicants.
