The docufilm Sotto Nuovi Cieli. Storie di Donne Italiane in Spagna (Under New Skies. Stories of Italian Women in Spain), produced by the Com.It.Es in Madrid, is now available for global viewing thanks to the collaboration with Rai Italia. This documentary, which has already received awards at the Montecatini International Short Film Festival, provides a valuable opportunity to reflect on the emigration experiences and success stories of Italian women who, over the years, have embarked on the difficult but challenging path to a life “under new skies” in Spain. The project was strongly encouraged by the Secretary General of the Foreign Ministry, Ambassador Riccardo Guariglia, during his term of office as Italian Ambassador to Spain from 2020 to 2023.
The project was created with the aim of giving voice to the stories of these women, bearing witness not only to the difficulties of emigration, but also to the achievements, challenges met and the fundamental role that Italian women played in building bridges between Italy and Spain. The docufilm explores the change in women’s role in emigration. While in the past women accompanied their husbands, today many of them are autonomous protagonists of their lives abroad. A change that reflects the growth of the Italian female community in Spain, who has risen from 5,000 in 2000 to over 50,000 in 2023, according to official data from the Consulate General of Italy in Madrid.
Watching this docufilm you can learn more about female emigration to Spain, thanks to interviews with women from all social classes, generations and regional backgrounds. It is a unique opportunity to discover the stories of those who were able to build a new life in a different country, but rich in opportunities, even nowadays.
