Under-Secretary Giro introduced a draft regional convention on the confiscation of illegal assets to the Security Commission of the Central American Integration System ( SICA), prepared with the contribution of the Italian police, anti-Mafia directorate, customs police and the President of the Senate, Pietro Grasso.

This is the first draft of a binding regional convention on investigative collaboration, which draws on the national experience of various of the region’s countries, and incorporates the international UN standards on confiscation and money-laundering, which are essential to dismantling organised crime and thwarting its ability to infiltrate the society to nurture a criminal culture.

“This is the hard lesson that Italy has learned and for which we have paid dearly in human lives, among them those of Falcone and Borsellino. Ratification of this binding regional convention would mark a turning point in the political and economic future of Central America, and send an important signal to the international community”, Under-Secretary Giro asserted.

“The decision to undertake the route of regional collaboration is a courageous one. Italy intends to continue to support that decision in this phase and to ensure SICA constant encouragement in its efforts at regional ratification in the briefest time possible”, the Under-Secretary concluded.
