Minister for Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini, condemned the abduction of 90 persons in northeast Nigeria.
“Targeting children and mothers is a blow to the entire country, and will condition its future. The international community has mobilised, and continues to support the efforts of President Goodluck Jonathan. But political action against terrorism around the world must go hand in hand with support for campaigns to promote human rights in general, and of women in particular, and of the right to an education. It is only on cultural terrain, and by fostering sustainable development, that the roots of extremist movement can be eradicated wherever they are at work”, Minister Mogherini stated. Over recent weeks, Italy has supported the UN and EU’s decision to place the Boko Haram group on the list of international terrorist organisations subject to sanctions.
