Gentiloni: Conversation with Netanyahu, call for de-escalation

This morning the Italian Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Paolo Gentiloni held a phone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The Minister expressed Italy’s concern over the recent rise in episodes of violence, particularly in Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip.

Gentiloni renewed the call for all the parties to contribute to a de-escalation of the tensions, reiterating Italy’s firm condemnation of Hamas’ appeals for violence. In confirming the support for the prospect of two States as the only solution, the Minister expressed his hope that the upcoming meeting between Netanyahu and Abbas could represent both a conciliatory message and a signal toward the necessary resumption of negotiations to which Italy intends to contribute in every possible way.
