Africa has lost one of its most brilliant architects of peace, declared Deputy Minister Mario Giro on learning of the death of Mons. Jaime Gonçalves, one of the protagonists of the peace process in Mozambique, which ended with the signing of the Agreement in Rome in 1992. His tenacity, combined with a profound love for other people, meant that Mons. Gonçalves played a decisive role in the peace process. The strong links with Italy and the Community of Sant’Egidio allowed Mons. Gonçalves to stay in touch with our country, which he loved deeply, concluded Mr Giro.
