Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Angelino Alfano:
“The Capaci massacre on 23rd May, twenty-five years ago, did not stop Giovanni Falcone’s ideas. In fact these ideas inspired Italy’s anti-mafia legislation, which is the most advanced in the world. It is no coincidence that the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime was signed in Palermo, in 2000, to pay tribute to Falcone’s birthplace.”
This year, as non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, we have decided to honour Giovanni Falcone by holding a high level debate in his memory at the UN General Assembly on 19 June”.
The purpose of the debate – added the Minister – is to discuss the implementation of the Palermo Convention (UNTOC), 17 years since it was signed, and the potential for it to be adapted to the new challenges of preventing transnational crime.”
“We consider this to be the best way to remember Judge Falcone and to ensure that his ideas will inspire legislation both in Italy and in all the Member States of the United Nations”, concluded Minister Alfano.
