Minister Alfano confirms the release of Italian citizen Yuri Guaiana

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Angelino Alfano, has confirmed the release from administrative detention of Italian citizen Yuri Guaiana, who was previously held by Russian authorities.

“The Italian Embassy and the Italian General Consulate in Moscow, whom I asked to take immediate action, have assisted Mr Guaiana and obtained a swift and positive solution to the case. The contacts made with the competent Authorities of that Country took place in a spirit of maximum cooperation,” said Minister Alfano.

In particular, Minister Alfano recently supported and endorsed an Equal Rights Coalition’s joint statement concerning reports of arbitrary detention, torture and killing of homosexual people by security services and other government authorities in the Republic of Chechnya. The statement called on Russian Authorities to conduct an independent and credible investigation, take all steps necessary to ensure the release of anyone wrongfully detained and hold accountable anyone found responsible for such deeds.
