UNGA. Alfano meets with Salamé: “Strong appreciation for an action aimed at promoting inclusive dialogue in Libya”

On the sidelines of the 72nd General Assembly of the United Nations and shortly after meeting with his Libyan counterpart, Mohamed Siyala, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Angelino Alfano, had a cordial conversation with the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative for Libya, Ghassan Salamé.

Minister Alfano reaffirmed to Salamé his staunch support for his initiative “to orient Libyan interlocutors towards a path of reconciliation and inclusive dialogue”.

The Foreign Minister then observed that “relaunching an inclusive political process is the only way of, one day, leading the country towards the elections hoped for. In this sense, any acceleration would risk being counterproductive.”

Minister Alfano then declared that Italy will continue to make a firm contribution to “guarantee a progressive and constant improvement in the living conditions of local communities, with utmost attention for the respect for human rights.”
