Meeting of the MAECI-Civil Society Task Force on the moratorium on the death penalty

On the eve of the World Day against the Death Penalty, the Farnesina today hosted the meeting of the MAECI-Civil Society Political Task Force, chaired by the Undersecretary of State Manlio Di Stefano, on actions for a universal moratorium on the death penalty.

The Task Force is essentially aimed at coordinating the awareness-raising activities conducted by the Government and by major civil society organizations committed to this issue ahead of the UN General Assembly’s biannual Resolution for a universal moratorium on the use of the death penalty. In addition to the MAECI, the Task Force also includes the Comunità di Sant’Egidio, Nessuno Tocchi Caino and the Italian Section of Amnesty International.

At the meeting, Undersecretary of State Di Stefano told participants: “Italy played a leading role in the negotiations for this Resolution from the very start and, knowing that it is a goal that we share with Italy’s civil society, it is particularly important for us to have this dialogue and debate with you.”  

Di Stefano then recalled that the event that Italy co-organised last 25 September as part of the awareness-raising campaign and concomitantly to the opening week of the United Nations General Assembly, which was attended by Minister Moavero Milanesi and, among others, by the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet.
