Undersecretary Merlo meets Guatemala’s Deputy Foreign Minister

The Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Riccardo Merlo, met Guatemala’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Jairo David Estrada Barrios, at the Farnesia today.

Undersecretary Merlo said that Italy is looking with much interest at the Central American Region which it believes has great potential for economic development. He reconfirmed that Italy fully supports Italian enterprises that intend to enter public-private partnerships with Guatemalan authorities to build strategic infrastructure in the country.

He agreed with Guatemala’s Deputy Foreign Minister Barrios that the bilateral agreements now being discussed, including negotiations between Italy and SICA (Central American Integration System) should be finalised as soon as possible. Signing these agreements could lead to an official visit of Italian authorities in Guatemala.

The situation in Nicaragua and Venezuela was also discussed. Undersecretary Merlo said: “The Italian government follows with great concern the political and humanitarian situation in Venezuela where a large Italian community lives.”
