
The Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ricardo Merlo, and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Costa Rica, Lorena Aguilar Revelo, met at the Farnesina to sign a “Memorandum of Understanding on the Establishment of a Bilateral Consultation Mechanism” between the two Countries on issues of common interest, “in particular on political, economic, cultural, consular, social and educational issues.”
“The signing of the Memorandum confirms the excellent relations with Costa Rica, as well as the intention to further strengthen them” – said Merlo, underlining “the important contribution afforded by Italian companies and technologies to the development of the Country” and “the interest of our companies in participating in international tenders called by the Costa Rican Government”.
The meeting was also an opportunity to exchange views on the Venezuelan crisis and on the Nicaraguan crisis. Regarding Venezuela in particular, the need for a political solution that includes free and credible presidential elections was reiterated, and great concern was expressed for the humanitarian situation in the Country.
Finally, the Undersecretary and the Deputy Minister had a fruitful exchange of views on the upcoming Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Climate (COP 25, under the Chilean Presidency) which will be preceded by a Pre-Cop, which this year will be held in Costa Rica from 8 to 10 October, also thanks to Italy’s support.
