Minister Di Maio meets with the Foreign Minister of Tunisia, Khemaies Jhinaoui

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Luigi Di Maio, had a cordial meeting with his Tunisian counterpart, Khemaies Jhinaoui, on the sidelines of today’s 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly. “With my Tunisian colleague we discussed the principal regional dossiers, starting with the Libyan crisis and its fallout in terms of instability and the migration crisis, in respect of which Italy considers its partnership with Tunisia to be particularly important. Especially crucial is our partnership in combating human trafficking and international terrorism. Italy will maintain unvaried its support in managing migrants and refugees coming from Tunisia, in building the institutions’ capacity to combat traffickers and in promoting the economic development of hosting communities,” said Minister Di Maio.

“For us Tunisia is an economic and trade partner of fundamental importance, and the bulwark of stability and democracy in the Mediterranean area, as it revealed to be also during the orderly and peaceful performance of the first ballot in the presidential elections. We undoubtedly intend to give added momentum to our bilateral cooperation,” Minister Di Maio concluded.
