Libya: Di Maio-Siyala talk

Following yesterday’s air strike that hit the military college in Hadaba, south of Tripoli, causing dozens of deaths and injuries, including among the civilian population, Minister Di Maio had a telephone conversation with Foreign Minister Mohamed Siyala. Minister Di Maio expressed his condolences to the Government of National Accord and the families of the victims and condemned the attack.

Any military action – said Minister Di Maio – causes unjust suffering to the civilian population, aggravates the humanitarian crisis and fuels a very dangerous escalation of the conflict.

Italy rejects the logic of military confrontation, which in recent weeks has increasingly involved civilian targets and caused further unjustified suffering to the Libyan people. Italy is firmly convinced that there is no military shortcut to achieve a lasting and sustainable solution to the Libyan crisis and therefore calls on all parties to immediately cease all military actions and return to a path of political dialogue under UN auspices.
