On June 4, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Luigi Di Maio will co-chair a virtual meeting of the 32 members of the Small Group of the Global Coalition against Daesh with US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo.
The videoconference will allow to assess the progress of Coalition activities and to update the strategy to fight the terrorist organization – also taking into account the global health emergency – while waiting to be able to host in Italy the plenary meeting of the 82 Coalition members, which will be scheduled as soon as circumstances permit.
The meeting on June 4 will focus in particular on Iraq and Syria, where signs of the resumption of Daesh’s insurgency activities have recently been recorded. However, there will be significant references to the global ramifications of the terrorist group, especially in West Africa and the Sahel. In line with its multidimensional commitment in the region, Italy promotes greater involvement of the Coalition in this area, in order to strengthen the security of the entire Mediterranean basin.
