Today, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Luigi Di Maio, will co-chair a virtual meeting of the 32 members of the Global Coalition Against Daesh core team with US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo.
The videoconference will make it possible to take stock of the state of the Coalition’s activities and to update the strategy to counter the terrorist organisation – also in light of the global health emergency – while waiting to host the plenary meeting of the 82 members of the Coalition in Italy, which will be scheduled as soon as circumstances allow.
The meeting will focus in particular on Iraq and Syria, countries where there have recently been signs of recovery of Daesh’s insurgent activity. However, there will be significant references to the global ramifications of the terrorist group, particularly in West Africa and the Sahel. Italy, consistently with its multidimensional commitment in the area, promotes a greater involvement of the Coalition in this region, with a view to strengthening the security of the entire Mediterranean basin
