COVID-19: Del Re participates in Development Ministers meeting to support vulnerable countries

Vice Minister Del Re participated by videoconference in a meeting of Development Ministers of a group of nations leading in contributions to the pandemic global response in support of the most vulnerable countries. The meeting, convened on a British-Canadian initiative, aimed to establish a platform for discussion on the challenges posed by the COVID-19 emergency and potential solutions to be adopted in the leading international fora (UN, OECD, G7, G20).

Del Re stressed the importance of multilateralism in tackling a crisis that, having a global character, can only be addressed in solidarity and collectively, strengthening coordination and partnership among the donor countries. The Vice Minister stressed that enhancing its sectoral expertise Italy intends to be a protagonist of the global response to Covid-19.  The Country has two essential priorities: research, development, and distribution of a universal vaccine, strengthening food security. In this last regard, Del Re described the objectives and possible instruments of the initiative launched by Italy in cooperation with FAO for the establishment of a global Food Coalition, hoping for broad support.

All participants agreed in considering food security and equitable access to health systems as priorities together with prevention and counteraction initiatives to guide the political action of donors in the coming months. It is essential to avoid neglecting the strategic goal of achieving all the objectives of Agenda 2030.
