Italy welcomes the agreement reached for the formation of a new Afghan government and praises the political forces that decided to coalesce around a common and inclusive project for a stable, peaceful and prosperous Afghanistan.
We congratulate President Ghani for his second mandate at the helm of the Country and we welcome the creation of a High Council of National Reconciliation that will steer the common effort of all Afghans towards a better future. Italy looks forward to working with the new government and to strengthen the strategic partnership between our two countries.
It is now time to focus on the many challenges Afghanistan is facing, from the peace process and the urgency to bring to an end decades of conflict, to the need to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this regard, we call on the Taliban to immediately stop violence and seize without delay this unique opportunity to sit at the negotiating table and to contribute in good faith to the future of Afghanistan.
