Del Re holds talks with Minister Costa. Strategic collaboration between the Italian Cooperation system and the Environment Ministry

The Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs responsible for International Cooperation, Emanuela Del Re, held video conference talks with the Minister of the Environment, Territorial Planning and Marine Protection, Sergio Costa, on the present and future synergies between the two government departments, with regard to international cooperation.
Mr. Costa and Ms. Del Re agreed on the need to further deepen the collaboration between the Italian Cooperation system and the Ministry of the Environment. “We are very much relying on the Environment Ministry to further the actions and values of international cooperation”, the Vice Minister said. In particular, she expressed satisfaction for the recent finalisation of the agreement between the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and Environment Ministry. “The objective of AICS is to introduce environmental sustainability as a cross-sector issue for Italian development cooperation and therefore the collaboration with the Environment Ministry is strategic,” Ms. Del Re also stressed.

The Sahel was identified, during the meeting, as a priority area for collaboration, bearing in mind that environmental protection has a high added value for ensuring stabilisation and security in the region.

The other priority region is the Mediterranean, “where there already is an important investment of national resources, but where we nevertheless need to ratchet up coordination with European resources – the Vice Minister said – also by using the new European Neighbourhood, Development and International Cooperation Instrument (NDCI), which allows interventions largely focused on climate change mitigation programmes and projects”.
