The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Luigi Di Maio, held a telephone conversation today with the UN Acting Special Representative for Libya, Stephanie Williams.
Minister Di Maio expressed satisfaction for the adoption of a Road Map, by the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum, in view of the elections scheduled for 24 December 2021, confirming Italy’s full support for the intra-Libyan dialogue efforts conducted by the UNSMIL and welcoming the effective coordination and leadership of the Special Representative Williams.
The Foreign Minister also expressed the hope that the process will remain firmly anchored to the UN mediation and the Berlin Process and that any parallel initiatives capable of weakening this framework will be avoided, stressing the need to protect the Libyan negotiating space from foreign and internal interference. Minister Di Maio welcomed the recent developments in the military and security field within the Joint Military Commission and, in particular, with a view to the reopening of the Sirte-Misurata coastal road and the withdrawal of foreign forces and fighters from the so-called “Sirte triangle”.
Last but not least, Mr. Di Maio highlighted the positive economic developments after the resumption of oil production and exports, advocating progress in the reform and unification of the Petroleum Facilities Guards to protect the oil sites.
